Requesting a Work-Around

I emailed Big Boss this morning, saying I am increasingly nervous being around so many people at work, with Covid on the rise and me in a higher-risk category (older & fatter);
could I come in and work when the store is closed?
Early mornings and Sundays?

There's no reason I need to be there when customers are there, but I'd have to have a store key and the code to the alarm, or BB would have to come let me in and out himself.
I don't know if he'll go for that.

The thing is, the Covid protocol at my workplace is ... basic, which might be sufficient, if people were compliant.
But that is not the case.

Management has not taken kindly to suggestions for improvement.
So I didn't mention it because I thought it would be met with something like resentment, but I don't just feel nervous about customers' behavior.
It's some of my coworkers, including volunteers, who are not compliant. Sometimes because they don't believe in Covid, sometimes because they just forget about it, which is weirdly easy to do. I have sometimes been guilty of this--so I make myself nervous too!

Among other things, (like wearing masks under the nose), some people eat lunch together––masks off, of course––in the break room, an enclosed space with poor ventilation.
Several times I've said, "Guys, there are too many of us in here" (as I left). That didn't seem to make any difference, except to the coworker with emphysema, who thanked me for the reminder.

Even if others aren't in the room, the virus can hang in the air for up to three hours.

It's annoying to me that I feel afraid to ask for a work-around... kinda queasy.

I know it's a normal fear. I just read Think Like a Freak, a book by the economists who wrote Freakanomics. They point out that FEAR OF SHAME is one of the main reasons people do (or don't do) something. I know this, but knowing it doesn't stop me feeling it.
I try to stand back from myself and see that I do feel it, and then go ahead and do the thing I think is right despite that queasiness.

Once again I call up my 2020 mantra:
IT'S OKAY TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.

It's a shame, though, that I don't trust my request will be met with empathy. I hope it will be, but I half-expect it will be met with something else...

If nothing else, I can request an unpaid leave, and failing that, (something I really don't want to do) I could quit my job.
I don't want to do either, but even less do I want to catch Covid.

I hope BB just says, fine, let's work-around!

  1. Oh, I totally understand. Lack of ventilation inside buildings is the probably one of the bigger causes of spread.

I've even given up going to my local coffee place since the middle of October. Yes, I miss the socialization but decided there were too many people sitting at tables, tables were barely 6 ft apart. etc. And I would rather be healthy than socialize!

This past weekend I thought about stopping by the local Salvation Army but lately too many people in there and not always paying attention to others.

So my getting out is grocery shopping which is the best - go with a list, get it, and get out. My dog and I do go for a walk every afternoon but we rarely run into anyone.

I hope you are able to do this. You would probably be amazed at how much more can be done if no one is there! Besides lots of toys to rescue when no one else is there!!!

  3. ps. I did go to my local used/new bookstore as they sent me a coupon because I hadn't spent any money there in weeks! While in there briefly, one of the customers was holding his mask away from his chin so I left shortly.

Holding the mask away is as bad as the under the nose mode!

  6. I'm very annoyed on your behalf that so many don't take this seriously, still! After all the evidence, some still think it is a hoax.
I read the later post first so congratulations on the work-around :)
