Marz recently read me some parenting advice along these lines:
Parents, strive to be boring for your kids.
Children grow best with predictable, steady, reliable love. Be a stable place for them to launch from and return to.
I liked that!
My own mother was a very interesting person to have as a parent... Left me pretty jangled.
And yet, would I have wanted her to be more like my "boring" Auntie Vi, much as I benefited from Vi's loving stability... or like Queen Elizabeth?
No!
I resist--a little--this outpouring of admiration for the queen.
I, too, feel the shock of losing a steady-to-the-point-of-boring presence.
And yet, I don't forget what that boring facade was masking.
She was the face of a churning machine.
I'm sad to see her passing, yes, because she was reassuring in these whirlwind times. But I never subscribed to her world view...
