Fly Me to the Moon

Today is this blog's 11th birthday! [See all blog birthdays.]
I was going to clean my apartment thoroughly today.

I made a good start.
But then I had to make this.

Astronaut spread from The New Book of Knowledge Annual, 1970, which I got at a thrift store on the way to Duluth.

Moustronaut from May I Come In? (kids book), 1969

  1. Yes...Yes, it is made of green cheese. No hoax here!

  2. What a great mash-up! I can tell the mouse is from the 60's just based on the colors.

But there are some people who still claim it was a Hollywood stunt filmed on a sound stage.

  3. Great caption, Sparker! I hadn't even thought of the cheese angle.

KIRSTEN: Thanks! Yeah, those distinctive colors of the era.

I never understood the point of claiming it was a fake--what was the govt's motivation? to fake out the Soviets?

But there were more and better reasons to actually DO IT RIGHT--as Neil deGrasse Tyson says,
"[L]et us not fool ourselves into thinking we went to the Moon because we are pioneers, or discoverers, or adventurers. We went to the Moon because it was the militaristically expedient thing to do."
—From "The Sky Is Not the Limit"

I like the XKCD comic "Moon Landing" about NdGT's refutation of the idea that NASA fakes the moon landing:
If NASA would fake that success, why haven't they faked any other great successes since then?

  4. Did that mouse float all the up to the moon or is it a moon mouse?

  5. BINK: Good question! I honestly don't know. Because it can breathe without a space suit, however, I'm inclined to think it's a moon mouse!
    What do you think?
