Saturday at the Store

I often cull the Kids' Books section on Saturdays and put out unsold books for free. Big Boss doesn't want us to give things away--"then people won't buy that thing", but kids' books don't work that way.
Customers who buy kids' books search for the pristine ones.  These are all a bit dinged up on the edges.
Also, people love free stuff!

(Geez, I just now see how dirty the bench is...
Grateful-J cut down that red bench at my request a couple years ago, so we could get the free food and stuff up off the floor, where it always used to be set, and no one's cleaned the bench since then.

I'll clean it when I next go in, on Tuesday.
)

I left work a couple hours early, to go see a movie with bink (See How They Run).
As I was leaving work, a little girl, about eight, and her two younger brothers came into the entryway carrying their own box and started looking through the book box, still half full.

I said to the girl, "I work here. You can take the whole box, if you want."

She looked at me. "Todos?"

"Yes, todos," I said. (This is about the extent of my Spanish.)

"Thank you", she said, and smiling with her brothers carried the heavy box to a house across the street.

The movie was just okay, but I'm still agog to be sitting in a movie theater--there haven't been many movies I've wanted to see since they started coming out again after Covid shut movie-making down.
I can't stand Marvel movies anymore.
"Empty gorgeousness", as Hilary Mantel said of costume dramas.

Some more recent photos....

Me walking to the post office this week--past one of the many murals up and down Lake St--this is one of my favorites.

Yesterday Ass't Man & Samantha were working on the Christmas display--I added Pongo and puppies.

In BOOK's...

Kids playing with a toy they opened... I don't mind--they were having so much fun.

Have a great Sunday!

  1. You mad those kids’ day.

You mentioned “dinged”: some of our board books are chewed up around the edges. Some books are to be tasted, etc.

  2. the bosses mentality about giving is f*cked. I think it works the opposite way- - I gave a lote of stuff away when i had booths- people were so pleased that they came back to buy something. But more than that It just felt right.
I can not believer your weather already- going to be a long winter I reckon.
That is a happy package that you are holding in the photo of mural and face!!!

MICHAEL: They were so happy, carrying off their box of books!
I don't see many Hispanic parents at the store buying kids books, but that's not to say the kids don't want them.

We get plenty of chewed books donated too. They really don't move, even offered for free, so I put them in recycling.

LINDA SUE: I agree--Big Boss has a wrong idea about giving things away. It's such a friendly thing, people feel cared for, and that's good business.... as well as A Good Thing.
