With sub-zero temps this week, the store has been sloooowwww--few customers and fewer donators. I've sorted most of the donated books and as many toys as can fit on the sales floor and had time to arrange my dolls yesterday.
I'm posting close-ups, below, for those who want to see them more clearly (me).
The plaque on my wall reads "Not My Circus, Not My
Monkeys" ––(unnecessary small-print bottom line: "not my problem")––but that only applies to
the other humans at the store.
This crew is my circus.
Btw, that blue-eyed Norwegian doll's head, above right, was last seen on a Sonic the Hedgehog body. But my dearest, nerdiest coworker said, "Oh, Sonic could be worth some money," so Sonic's head was restored and Norwegian dollie is now happy to be part of a space crew.
(I priced Sonic at $3--a bit pricey for toys at our store--and it was immediately bought by another coworker. I probably haven't said, but since the fall, two people in their twenties have started working at the store, which is wonderful. Before them, all of us were over forty, and mostly over fifty years old.)
Some of these will go on the sales floor too, one of these days.
Close-ups of the stuff on the walls too, BELOW.
The gold-framed Senate Resolution is approval from the State of California for hot-air balloonist Don Piccard and crew to attempt to break a high-altitude record.
The Barbie dolls, above left (under the lampshade), are there because they're vintage and I need to price them specially. I feel neutral about them. I suppose they were real to the people who loved them; but they don't register that way to me, unlike the other toys.
(I put up that owl picture, above, top right, because a coworker gave it to me for the wall, thinking I'd like it. I didn't, much, but I like the coworker.
The owl has grown on me. At first I thought it had no sense of humor, but that's not the case.)
Temps are not forecast to rise above 0ºF until Monday (when the Artic cold front will pass, and we'll start to head toward merely freezing cold).
I'm taking a three-day weekend: not worth it to bundle up and take the bus to work.
LOVE the way your desk area is looking! So many interesting characters to keep you company!
ReplyDeleteDo you realize that that Thomson (or Thompson) was yours originally? Did you get it in Denmark...? Anyway, I'm glad it's with the crew now.
I'm intrigued by that weird cow...does it have human legs? It's SO odd! Does it have a function...like a piggy bank...or is it 100% decorative?
What an great collection of dolls! They all seem to be watching for something! And the paper ephemera is delightful. Just so many little things to find every time I come back.
ReplyDeleteMonday will be one of our coldest days but Wednesday we finally hit above 15 degrees. My dog is usually happy to go out but -15 wind chill is apparently his limit.
Kirsten
BINK: (Is that you, Anonymous?)
ReplyDeleteI will take a better photo of the cow---its legs are a woman acrobat's or something...
The whole thing is a bell!
KIRSTEN: Thanks--I do enjoy the flotsam and jetsam!
Me and your dog--I prefer cold to heat, but -15 is a bit much!
When I worked at the township, the road super had a not my circus, not my monkeys sign.
ReplyDeleteI once crocheted that circular pansy doily for my mother or grandmother. Wonder if that is it.
I love your desk area and smiled to see your Girlette calendar. I really love the three decorated cats you have hanging to the left of the Senate whatsit.
ReplyDeleteThe baby doll has the brightest blue eyes I've ever seen.
The cow has a more than passing resemblance to Elsie, the Borden cow. And there were Elsie figurines. But the ears here look too large, and Elsie is usually depicted with a garland of flowers.
ReplyDeleteThat owl looks to me like a stern message to would-be shoplifters.
Visiting your blog is like a virtual visit to a thrift store -- and I miss thrift stores so much! (All ours are closed for the time being. Our Oxfam shop hasn't been open since last August or September, I think.) I love all your paper ephemera.
ReplyDeleteOwl has a very dry sense of humor. Your circus is fabulous and deserves a tea party at least! What Steve said- Ditto! I love your place of work!
ReplyDeleteThat was me as anonymous 1. Sorry about that. So what about the Thomson? Did you recognize him?
ReplyDeleteBINK: I did not realize he was mine, no! I did have Tintin figures from Denmark--not sure where he came from though...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
