Chipmunks? Really, 2020? Now it's chipmunks? That's it--I am breaking up with you.

I am officially OVER 2020.

Today on the porch, I'm having a nice mutual meltdown with bink about how some people think face-shields are as good as masks (they're not), when I hear a chorus of squeaky chirping... from inside the house.

I look in, and there's a chipmunk in the living room.
It ran away into the other room. I went and got a broom to escort it outside, but then I couldn't find it.

I swept up a bunch of little droppings though--has the chipmunk been living under the couch?

IS THIS A CHIPMUNK INVASION????

I don't know. I'm hoping the chipmunk got back out through the tear in the screen door the cats made, which I assume is how it got in in the first place.
I taped the tear up real good with duct tape,
so I've either sealed the chipper in the house or have made built an impenetrable wall of duct tape...

But really.
Will this madness never end?

What are you going to throw at us next, 2020?

I guess if I've got duct tape, I can handle it... Probably.

P.S. I am cheering myself up by reading Lanterne Rouge: The Last Man in the Tour de France, by Max Leonard--a history of all the bicyclists who have come in last in the great race. Of course if you even finish the damn thing, you're a winner.

Just keep pedaling.

  1. Why is it called "Lanterne Rouge"? Do they wave a red lantern when the last rider comes in?

I hope you didn't seal the chipmunk inside, for its sake AND yours!

  2. CROW: Exactly!

STEVE: Crow got it right--it's from "the red lantern hung on the rear vehicle of a passenger railway train or the brake van of a freight train, which signalmen would look for in order to make sure none of the couplings had become disconnected."

Alas, the chipmunk was hiding under the stove this noon... the cats were on guard. I've taken them outside (they do go outside) and am sitting with them.

  3. My son tells me chipmunks are very territorial, so at least you can take comfort that you won't get more than one (unlike mice!) One at a time, anyway...
    Hope the open door works!

  4. How about "don't tell them you can't see them in person because you might catch what they have." Obviously they are times when this is applicable.

However I have had people tell me that they couldn't eat lunch with me after I lost a job because they might lose their job. In other words, losing a job is contagious!

I have also heard this from people saying about how they couldn't visit someone who has cancer because they might catch it.
