Maybe Star-M means alarm? Was there an internal telephone instead? Or it just wants you to know if you don't have a cellphone to call out, you will die in there before you are found.

All you need to know... and the meaning should be clear even to someone who might have become alarmed despite wordy reassurances. I think the hatch must be the opening in the roof of the elevator car--I've seen it in the movies.
