Holiday Movies #2: Rocky

What's my criteria for winter holiday movies here?
Just to limit myself, I'll say the movie must not only feel suitable for holidays (that is, it should acknowledge human vulnerability as well as hope--or, even, merriment), it must also at least mention a holiday.

By those lights, Rocky counts--all about the possibility of redeeming failure, plus it has one of my favorite quotes about a holiday; it's sometimes made me truly at peace about being alone at Thanksgiving.

I found the photo in my review of Rocky, one of my old Movie Moments posts from 2008. (2008! gives me pause.)

Anyone want to say what your favorite holiday movies are?

  1. Miracle on 34th Street; It's a Wonderful Life; the one about the b-b gun, the leg lamp - boy's name was Ralphie?

I think there are a couple more, but I can't remember the titles.

  2. CROW: Classics, all!
The one with the Red Ryder BB gun is A Christmas Story--such an obvious name, it's hard to remember.

  3. My favorite is Love, Actually...
Not so old, but so cleverly done & warm spirited; plus most of the cast has british actors (Yes, it's a british film, but they often pack those with famous american actors) and british accents for this american are always an aphrodisiac.

  4. LAURA: "Love, Actually"--I know so many people who love that movie. I think my favorite is the montage at the end of people greeting one another at the airport--
did you know that was real?
They filmed surreptitiously and then asked for permission to use the footage.

A guy I know used to put on the DVD regularly throughout high school because the *sound* of it was so soothing. He didn't even like the movie!

  5. The Apartment — it has New Year's Eve.

  6. MICHAEL: I liked that movie but haven't seen it in ages and totally did not remember the holidays! Thanks for that--I like it when movies somehow ride on holidays but aren't full-on holiday movies.
