...would this have been a text instead of a telegram?

From President Abraham Lincoln to General Ulysses Grant
"I have seen your dispatch express
ing your unwillingness to break your hold where you are.
Neither am I willing. Hold on with a bull-dog
grip, and chew & chomp (?), as much as possible."

Ohgod. Think how miserably HOT that war must have been...
Under a blanket of thick humidity and heat these past few days,
I cannot imagine donning a wool uniform, hoisting heavy weapons and pack, and marching off to a field of blood.
Actually, even if the weather was perfect for conducting a war comfortably, my imagination flags.
OMG, the smells...
ReplyDeleteAlmost unimaginable.
ReplyDeleteI left a cup of milky coffee in a travel mug when I went housesitting.
When I came back after a few days, I almost gagged on the stench when I poured the festering glop down the sink.
And that would be NOTHING in comparison.
