Mid-Autumn Doll's Dream

Third post this morning...

Now I'm back home, I'm continuing with costuming for the girlettes' version of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream--now in mid-autumn.

They only want to dress up as Bottom or any of the other Mechanicals, or Puck, they said, and none of "the stupid or bad characters".

(Are the Mechanicals stupid? Is Puck bad? They don't think so.)

On Sunday, I went to the nearby church's basement rummage sale, and I bought two handmade Barbie doll outfits. Roughly constructed, but only two dollars each. Made of velvety black cloth, they seemed possibilities, cut-down to size, for the play.

Turns out, they made good costumes for [anonymous] members of the Royal Court. "Smart, good ones--they sneak sand into Theseus's underwear."
(Okay, right. Basically, more Pucks.)

On the left, ABOVE: her pants legs are sleeves from the Barbie jumpsuit, and her tunic is one of its wide pants legs.

We already have one Puck, but they wanted another, so I worked on that costume too.

This Puck looks great in person, but I had a hard time photographing her. (You might think photographing a doll is all the same, but it's not.)

BELOW: I don't usually edit the photos much, but I like this one bleached, to get the ominous prettiness of the fairy. Fairies are weird.

Art Sparker sent me those glass "flowers" years ago. ^ They are Victorian eyes for stuffed animals, on sharp metal stalks.
And that's an eye-dropper, you can see--for putting magic potions in eyes.

BELOW: Failed attempt at headgear. "She looks like a football player", the Royal Pucks point out.

And now I have to stop and go to work.
Have a magical day, but watch out for those tricksters!

  1. Is that medallion a lens from an old-time optometrist’s set-up?
