Penny Cooper is unhappy that this country (the United
States) is so illogical as to keep using Fahrenheit. I mean, look--we are almost the only country that still uses Fº (list here--others who do include Liberia & Micronesia).
And we should use metric measurements too. Except teaspoons, Penny Cooper says, "We should keep teaspoons because they are very nice."
Penny may not be as entirely logical as she thinks she is, but it seems British recipes (e.g. the recipe for Mary Berry's scones) do use teaspoons for spices, and metric weights for flour, etc.
Anyway, Penny Cooper wants full credit for how cold it is here––"Even for dolls"––and feels the F/C division makes it seem warmer than we are. A wave of frigid Arctic air has dropped temperatures "below-zero Fahrenheit".
That's below minus-17º Celsius.
It's -3ºF (–19ºC) this morning, and due to stay in this range for the next week.
Penny Cooper also nudges me to post this AMAZING portrait of her friend Racer. Racer now lives in London with Sarah Wallis, doll-artist extraordinaire of Circles of Rain--who painted the portrait and sent it to me! (It's large-postcard sized.)
I love this so, so much, it is one of my all-time favorite things in my possession. It captures Racer perfectly as a real, live girlette--I can feel her looking at me.
I can see she's still a totally bright-eyed spright! But she has grown up a little and traded in wearing her underwear on her head for a hat Sarah crocheted for her.
Thank you, Sarah!!!
That’s a sweet portrait.
ReplyDeletePlease ask Ms. Cooper about how to write out the temperature:
Chicago style: 10°C or 10°F.
APA style: 10 °C or 10 °F.
AMA style: 10° C or 10° F. Or maybe better, 98.6° F.
Which does she prefer?
Penny Cooper Style is to run them all together : 10°C.
ReplyDeleteThat way they stay together like they should and don’t go wandering off, she explains. (?!!)
racer's head gear probably depends on the season, Underpants for spring and summer probably. She is the ideal girl! Ms. Sarah is the most amazing painter of dolls and things on the planet at this time. Racer is lucky to have sat/stood for her. I would love to be Racer and live in Sarah's cosy house with the vats and the Andy.
ReplyDelete-19C? I would die of cold! I don't know how you all survive up there. Our winter daytime temps rarely get below 10C-50F although we sometimes get colder overnight. on the other hand our summer temps can often be in the high 30sC-low 40sC, for days at a time or even weeks. This summer has been cooler and wetter which I haven't minded one bit, although today is set to reach 35C (95F) and tomorrow 37C (89F), bearable but uncomfortable so I mostly stay inside with the airconditioner running.
ReplyDeletePenny is right about teaspoons, they are so pretty, well, some of them are, I've seen lovely old silver ones in antique stores. I love the painting of Racer, Sarah is so talented, I would frame that and hang it on the wall.
Definitely the hat for the weather..and a nice portrait!
ReplyDeleteWe are on the warmer(?!!) side of Scotland at the moment..but still freezing.
I am glad that we are not in the central Highlands with squeaky snow at -22⁰C !!
