Another in my series of "Curious" Donations to the Thrift Store.
This is a tattered, old valise, leftover from a long-ago estate sale, I'd guess. The faded tag reads,
The outside is some sort of woven plant material, over cardboard. Cloth strips make a replacement handle.
A coworker was going to throw it out. My coworkers save pristine things like leftover Xmas ornaments, even if they have proven to be unsellable, and tend to throw out anything old and worn. I can't blame them in this case since this literally SAYS it has no value.
I grabbed it for my Cool Old Stuff shelves...
It's beat up, but it's beautiful. Dirty, but not mildewed.
A similarly battered, old, leather doctor's bag sold for $9.99, but I'll price this just a couple bucks.

I think there are people in this world for whom everything must be new. And if it is old and tattered, it obviously has no value. I bet that is from the 20's or 30's.
I feel a rant coming on..............
Ooooh.... hey, yeah---I could set travel books in it, or some cool old books--it could sit on the top shelf:

Cool old stuff = Artist's corner. Seriously, a lot of us will rate and visit thrift stores based on the possibility of finding things of this nature - I've owned a number of similar items.

ReplyDeleteI think it's very cool-looking. Someone like a restaurant designer wanting objects with "character" -- or maybe a set designer -- might pay money for it, right?

STEVE: I once met a "kitsch wrangler" whose entire job was to find cool things for a chain of restaurants---kind of a fun job, I'd think.
Yes, I'd think they'd love such a thing as this valise.
If I can keep rescuing stuff like this from the trash, our store could become known as a place to look for such stuff.
