M/Patriotic

I usually feel squeamish about any kind of patriotism, associating it with belligerent puffery, but I sure swelled up with pride for my fellow Americans twice this past Independence Week.
I was especially moved to think of little kids witnessing these courageous women. (So maybe it's matriotism?)

1. As you already know, last week Bree Newsome climbed the flagpole of the South Carolina statehouse and removed the Confederate flag. She and her spotter James Tyson are part of the activist group Blackbird.

2. Yesterday, July 5, US soccer star thirty-five-year-old Abby Wambach played her last World Cup game, and after winning the tournament with a whopping 5–2 against Japan, Wambach kissed her wife, Sarah Hoffman, before being draped in an American flag.

I didn't want to put this in the post itself because it's an *ad*, but I gotta hand it to Nike for making a terrific fanvid for "American Woman" (to the song by the Guess Who):

Now that's what I'm talking about! Great post, Fresca; thanks for this.

Kisses and courage, I can get behind that sort of patriotism. The kind that is up to slapping the country when it misbehaves.
